Description

Man of Steel #1 (1986) by John Byrne & Dick Giordano

The story in the story :
thes "Space Plane" was originally intended to be a space shuttle.
It was changed at the last minute due to the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster that occured January 28, 1986, a few months before this issue hit newsstands. Byrne originally drew a very faithful depcition of a shuttle in the center panel of this page, but for publication, this was covered with a production stat featuring a more abstract, futuristic plane. This stat is included with the lot and loose from the page so Byrne's original intentions can be seen. The rest of the page is hand-drawn art.

Great piece of history with Byrne jumping to DC and relaunching the Superman character for a whole new generation.

I don't think I ever realized how different the ships look in panel 2 and 3. You can really see how panel 3 matches the original ship when the stat is removed.
