Crogan Adventures cartoonist Chris Schweizer ran A Dream of Swords Kickstarter campaign. Keep an eye on his online store for updates. I selected the original art option with a hardcover book and an extra book for my brother Stuart. The campaign went well and Chris made additional pieces to increase the page count. Additional items included a Swords with Names & their famous wielders booklet, a blank field notebook, and three bookmarks. I was pleasantly surprised to find this sketch on the first page of the book.

I grew up watching historical adventure movies like Captain Blood, The Seahawk, and The Adventures of Robin Hood with my brother. There were exciting sword fights between Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone. We watched the Ray Harryhausen Sinbad movies with his stop motion creatures. The sword fight with skeletons in Jason and the Argonauts was especially memorable. I met the animator at San Diego Comic Con three times and saw his figures and sets at the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences in Hollywood. I read naval adventure novels about Horatio Hornblower by C.S. Forester set during the Napoleonic Wars. As a young officer, he boarded French and Spanish ships with a single-shot pistol and cutlass. I read naval histories of Lord Nelson of the Battles of Cape St. Vincent, the Nile, Copenhagen, and Trafalgar. I read the biography of Captain Edward Preble who commanded U.S.S. Constitution against the Barbary pirates. The frigate fought three battles against Royal Navy frigates in the War of 1812. Under Captain Isaac Hull, the ship defeated H.M.S. Guerriere when she became known as “Old Ironsides” after British 18-pound shot bounced off her oaken hull. I visited the ship twice on my Boston trip.
