DescriptionJimmy Frise (1891-1948) was the longtime cartoonist for the Toronto Star, for which he created Life’s Little Comedies in 1920. Fries renamed the feature to Birdseye Center in 1923, and for the next 25 years he had a hit on his hands. The audience really related to this quirky cast of characters, set in a small fictitious Canadian town. I’m very pleased to offer a rare, rare, rare Birdseye Center original, most likely from the 1930s. Featuring Cap and Pigskin Peters, the two find out that they have super-charged The Noazark, Cap’s ship, much to the surprise of everyone on the dock. The piece features a good many of the main characters from the strip, and Frise’s ink work during the period was simply sweet as hell. Measuring 14”x 18¾”, the strip is in very nice condition, with a tiny piece of the lower right corner missing, and a little bit of White-out here and there. This piece came from cartoonist Doug Wright’s collection, and is labeled as such on the reverse. Wright continued Frise’s Juniper Junction strip in the late 1940s, after Frise passed away. As I mentioned earlier, Frise’s original art is quite scarce, so this is a rare opportunity. $750.00 + 17.00 first class shipping.Social/Sharing |
