Description

Pencils by John Buscema, inks by Alfredo Alcala. Savage Sword of Conan, issue #12, page 39, June 1976. Ink on comic art bristol, page size approx. 11.5" x 17.5".

I’ve been looking for a nice John Buscema Savage Sword page with Alfredo Alcala inks for some time. It had to have Conan; preferably in action, a nice female figure and a particular level of detail from the inks that I feel Alcala does so well. I dug into the Omnibus editions to see which pages fit the bill the best and was quite surprised to find that very few pages had what I wanted. Firstly, there weren’t as many JB/AA pages period as I remembered. Then the content wasn’t always there and the inks were sometimes too open, not detailed enough, and near the end of his tenure Alcala used some grey tones that didn’t appeal to me. It soon became apparent that my recollection of the art from the old days was a bit off. I also came to realize that a ‘done in one’ wasn’t happening either.

I was very pleased to acquire this page as it has the inks I wanted as well as great images of Conan in action. There is so much classic Buscema in this page that I couldn’t resist. I also love the variety of panel shapes and sizes. Now to find a similar quality female-centric page to round out my wish list.

Wow guys! What a stellar page. There isnt a bad panel in the bunch. Really a great example of a dynamic duo of comic art. Congrats!
