Description

In a sumptuous room in the Theatre of Lost Foosteps, Duke Nergal continues plotting with Melkiresh against both the Light Team and others on the Dark Team:

“But Caleb Lost doesn't suspect that her eminence Lady Druj has infiltrated the humans. He doesn't even know about the Watchers.” (Watchers, also called Naphidim, are fallen angels who work for Nergal. We haven't seen them yet.)

“Excellent work, Melkiresh. If you continue to serve me faithfully, I will get you a position on this plane of existence.”

“Nikolaus' position would suit me, my lord. I have some experience with humans. Belyalis and I worked as a pair, in the Galilee district.” (Interesting that Earth is a coveted assignment for members of the Dark Team.)

“That was a long time ago, Melkiresh. You have not performed well since then, and Prague brought disgrace to your colleague Belyalis.”

“Nikolaus' fault! I wonder how long that renegade scum can continue to play a double game with impunity!”

“Old Nik is clever. He enjoys important protections and a dense network of friends. But we'll see how he can handle himself, this time. It will be a delicate match, Melkiresh. Tomorrow night, a delegation of our opponents will also be watching the show.”

“So much the better. They will enjoy an unexpected treat, my lord.”

Another night and day pass, and it's opening night for the opera. Harlan and Kurjak greet arriving angelic guests on the roof of the theater. Notice their long shadows as they face the setting sun.

“Why the dark glasses? For an autumn sunset in Prague, they don't seem essential to me.”

“Trust me, you'll need them.”

“Ahh! This light!”

“Hold on tight!”

“Kurjak, this is Anyel. He's a friend from Boston*. The others are from his Team.”

* See #36, 'The Vampire Slayers.'

“H-Hiya...”

The references to previous issues and characters continue to come at us. Anyel Zant is another member of the angelic Light Team roughly on Caleb's level. He appears in issues 36, 54, 65, 104, 105, 116, 118, 181, 225, 246, and 247. The series doesn't outright refer to them as "angels," but come on, they are.

Love the way the sound effects are illustrated, they have a life of their own.

When you're constantly facing devils, it's good to see some backup arrive in the form of Angels (especially from Boston!). Dotti continues to bring the heat art wise with the two establishing/opening panels on each page and some great closeups!

If they can aim some sunlight into the crowd as part of the show's spotlight, I know they wouldn't get any repeat business from some of the patrons.
