Description
Another gem in my collection - titled 'So Silly of a Cylinder' the strip features Sanjak with a hypnotized April escaping into the jungle with stolen gold with Pat and Terry in hot pursuit.

Sanjak is regarded as the first lesbian character in comics. Caniff said that her name comes from an island next to Lesbos in ancient times and the monocle was a coded symbol of homosexuality. As you can see, she's also gender fluid wearing a suit in this strip but 'cross dressing' as an old woman in an earlier strip from the same storyline. (read more in this article - https://library.osu.edu/site/40stories/2020/01/31/sanjak-and-sexuality/)

In addition the cultural context, this is perfect example of Caniff's captivating storytelling prowess. The spots of black, interesting framing, sharp and dramatic angles, and a real sense of movement -- a masterclass in four panel storytelling.

Special thank you to Jeff who graciously parted with this to allow me to be the curator of this masterpiece for the foreseeable future, thanks Jeff!
