DescriptionAh yes, the Silver Surfer one-shot comic from 1982. A little controversial, not because of the storyline. But because John Byrne’s pencils didn’t quite come through the way they should have. I mean, what could possibly go wrong when you’ve got Tom Palmer inking, right? Apparently, everything. When I first saw the book, I actually thought Buscema had done the layouts. But that’s what happens when Palmer’s inking is involved, his ink style is so dominant, it can really override the penciler’s intent. Still, that didn’t stop me from going after this page. In fact, this page and the one that follows are my favorites from the book. Palmer’s inks are heavy throughout, but they do manage to let some aspects of Byrne’s work shine through here. Yup, it was quite a shock when those of us who anticipated this one-shot opened the cover to find the very Buscema/Palmer look of the finished inks overriding the Byrne pencils almost completely. But speaking for myself, Palmer's work was still SO good back then that I quickly fell in love as I flipped through the issue. Because yes, while we barely got any Byrne art from it, on the whole, it is so beautifully finished that it didn't bother me as much as it otherwise might have. Congrats on landing such a solid page, Alex!

Still looks cool as it was only a one shot of this pairing and a celebrated one at that being tough to find as a comic.

Disappointed by the book as a kid/teen, more appreciative as an adult. And then analzing to discern which is which from the two great artists is always a fun exercise
