MAKO: THE JAWS OF DEATH (1976) - Matted Hand-Painted Jack Thurston Poster Artwork

Matted poster artwork hand-painted by Hollywood posterist Jack Thurston for the promotion of William Grefe's Mako: The Jaws of Death. Historically recognized among the first films to attempt to capitalize on the landmark success of Steven Spielberg's Jaws, Mako depicted sharks as victims of human exploitation, as reflected by the sympathetic portrayal of consciousness in the eyes of the shark in the film's Style "A" one-sheet.

The iconic poster artwork for Spielberg's Jaws is one of the most celebrated and highly sought amongst film fans, but has long been missing, its current whereabouts still a mystery. This highly-detailed poster artwork, being for a film made to capitalize on Jaws' success, took clear inspiration from that famous but long-lost poster.

This artwork depicting a shark swimming towards a disembodied arm is rendered in mixed media on illustration board hand-marked "Jaws of Death 60775" in marker. A custom white matte frame is taped to the top of the board, while a strip of blue tape is applied to the bottom. The outside edges of the painting exhibit adhesive residue from the matte's original application along the borders. Dimensions: 18" x 24" (45.75 cm x 61 cm)
