Description"Guadalcanal" by Paul S. Newman. April-June 1964.The Battle of Savo Island begins. This page and the next remind me of the Battle of Sunda Strait issue of Combat. Sam uses three-panel layouts quite a bit in this book. The close-up of the first Japanese salvo is a powerful final panel. Social/Sharing |

The space is well warranted as Glanzman fills in each one with so much detail that you'd think he actually captured scenes in photos before putting them down here.

Thanks, Marcus! His memory also helped, having served on a destroyer during the war.

The three panel layout is great, as it offers a larger canvas for each illustration and Glanzman used them to great effect. Each panel is a winner, and I especially love the black smoke coming out of the cannon!

Thanks, Rubén! The page reminds me of the old documentary series Victory at Sea, despite this battle not being a victory.

given how close we are to the blast my guess is orange mixed with reds with yellow accents. that's the beauty of black and white art, it can be any color you want in your head especially if the right drugs are involved. I'm freaking out dude!!!

Forgot to upload the published page! Corrected! Colorist followed Sam's earlier instructions - lots of yellow! Now, about the drugs...
