Description

Herblock's political are quite scarce in the wild, as the vast majority are housed in the Library of Congress. So I was very glad to be able to pick up a very early piece by Herblock, which appeared in print on July 8, 1931. Herblock was only 22 years old at the time and working for the Chicago Daily News. A bit later, Herblock would make his way to Cleveland, before spending the rest of his career at the Washington Post. You'll note the cartoonier nature of Herblock's work at this time, drawn entirely with a brush. And quite confident for the young cartoonist.

The Soviet famine of 1930 until 1933 as a result of Stalin's policies pushing people toward modern industrialization at the expense of agriculture.
