Description"Battle of Midway Chapter 11" by Alcala. Cover date December 3, 1963. I haven't found a physical or digital copy of the issue except an image of the cover.I love Alcala's inking of the sea and his rendering of ships and planes. First and fourth panels are my favorites. Translation of Tagalog/Filipino text: "Meanwhile, after the Nautilus (sic - US submarine) torpedoed the Kaga (sic - Japanese aircraft carrier), it split apart and began to sink... However, the dive bombers led by McClusky who also attacked the Akagi (sic - Japanese aircraft carrier) were pursued by some Zeros McClusky's idea was to fly his dive bombers only about twenty feet above the water.... And while they were being chased, their gunners were also relentlessly firing... The other Zero was shot down and..." Historical note: McClusky was the USS Enterprise's air group commander. He retired from the Navy in 1956 as a captain but was administratively promoted to rear admiral because he received the Navy Cross for heroism during the battle. Admiral Chester Nimitz said that his decision to continue the search for the Japanese carriers and his judgment as to where they might be found "decided the fate of our carrier task force and our forces at Midway." These are tough to fnd intact as the humidity of the area made the paper tan and more brittle. Even for cherished artists like Alcala, this is a good a shape as you can hope for. The battle scenes are a cut above to engage the audience in the combat. You can see why he'd be recruited by DC to draw War and Horror titles.

Alcala was so damn good! It's a shame these books aren't accessible to read in any physical or digital format, but seeing the art is pretty special. congrats Peter!

Thanks, Kavi! I agree it's sad that the books aren't available. Alcala's family has plans to reprint some of his work in Filipino komix in a Tagalog language book, according to social media. I hope it comes to fruition.

The third panel is my favourite, followed closely by the first one! Once again, I'm in awe of Alcala's greatness and every time I see his work, especially this Silver Age stuff from his homeland, I always think "What would comics in America have been like had he been available to work for the Big Two on superhero titles at this point in time?". Illustrative excellence!
