Definitely tied to a place and time when the cold war was escalating with media like War Games, The Day After, etc. on kids minds. Maybe this prompted Superman 4's storyline.
Species who have sat atop the food chain have come and gone in the past, usually through no fault of their own, but there is no doubt the human species will be the first to have a hand in causing their own demise. Either through armaments such as this, or destruction of the environment. This is quite a powerful page.
