Olaf Gulbransson - Ink Caricature of Karl Vollmoller - 1914

Olaf Gulbransson (1873-1958) was a Norwegian artist, most well known for his caricatures and illustrations, especially those that appeared in the German magazine, Simplicissimus. This ink caricature is of the poet Karl Vollmoller, and was published in Gulbransson's 1914 book, "Fünfzig Unveröffentlichte Zeichnungen", which translates to "Fifty Unpublished Drawings".

Gulbransson's fine line work is nearly impossible to pick up with a scan, but I've included a detail shot to better show the line. I love Gulbransson's use of design with the figure, especially how he used the space of the page to intertwine with Vollmoller's figure.

The drawing has caused me to wonder if Al Hirschfeld might have been influenced at all by Gulbransson's work.
