The Dutch allround comic author Henk Kuijpers is known for 'Franka' (1974- ), one of the longest ongoing adventure comics in the Netherlands, topped only by Martin Lodewijk's 'Agent 327' (1966), although the latter's publication rhythm has seen long intermissions. The adventures of Franka are true "tours de force", characterized by well-crafted plots, an appealing cast and highly detailed realistic backgrounds. 'Franka' was additionally notable as the first adventure comic in The Netherlands with a strong, independent female protagonist. 'Franka' also enjoyed success abroad. The series was translated into French, German, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Catalan.
