Description

Hanneke has had it with Harlan's fantastical claims. She decides to return to Ghent:

“I notice you're not making any attempt to stop me or change my mind!”

“I would love to, with all my heart. But right now, being close to me could be very dangerous. Leaving is the best choice, Hanneke.”

“So you think you're in danger?”

“Don’t worry. I'll manage, like all the other times. I'll take you to the airport.”

“No way I'm leaving now! I'm a detective. Mysteries are my bread and butter, and there's a damn mystery here! In fact, maybe you're the living enigma to be deciphered. And besides... if you're really in danger, I'm certainly not going to be such a bitch as to abandon you now. At the very least, I'll find you a good psychiatrist to cure you of all your morbid fantasies.”

“I wish it were that simple.”

“Besides, you called me ‘my little Hanneke,’ and I'm a sucker for that sort of thing.” (Back on page 37.)

“Really? Who would have thought it?”

(So they go for a stroll in the snow.) “Kampa Island Park. It must be the coldest place in all of Prague. Why did you bring me here first? It's not the right season for making out on a park bench.”

“Judging by the course of your thoughts, I'd say you're feeling better. But we came here because I'm taking you to my real home, the Theatre of Lost Footsteps…”

“… Where you live with someone who plays the violin. Don't look at me like that. I heard it in the background of your phone calls, and it wasn't a record! But I don't know if it was a man or a woman. And I don't think there are any theaters on this tiny island. The guidebooks don't mention any.”

“Certainly not the guidebooks of this world. But the theater can be found, if you're in my company. Soon I'll introduce you to my friends.”

The violinist she heard was probably Caleb Lost, after whom the Theatre of Lost Footsteps is named. Cropera does amazing facial work throughout, depicting the tense discussion between Harlan and Hanneke.

Where in the world
Did I do it wrong
My little Hanneke
You still belong here
In my Prague, no matter what you do
(My little Hanneke, I still love you)

Where in the world
Did I Ghent you down
My little Hanneke
When you're with Harlan
The world was sucky, seems funny now
(I lost you darlin' but I don't know how)

Can you imagine what Cropera would do on a book such as Daredevil or Batman!?

Hanneke is determined to get to the bottom of the mysteryu that is Harlan. But will she able to accept it.

Really like that the point of view on the last panel.
