Harlan bristles at the suggestion that while the forces of evil seek him, he should seek refuge within Caleb's theater. Kurjak rebukes him:

"Stop trying to always be the hero. I'd gladly sign up to stay locked in here with that beautiful Belgian policewoman." (Meaning Harlan's girlfriend Hanneke)

"I wanted to show her Prague..."

"I'll be her tour guide, very willingly. To think you let me believe she was ugly and had buck teeth!"

(Tesla returns with Hanneke) "May we come in? We're dressed for dinner, and I lent Hanneke one of my new Neo-gothic dresses. How does she look?"

"Hanneke... I was just saying that you were beautiful, but... you aren't getting better looking by the hour, by any chance, are you?"

"Ha ha!"

(Tesla whispers to Harlan) "She's nice and far from stupid, but she has the flaw of being crazy about you, the poor thing, to the point of being almost embarrassing."

"Thank you for your patience, Tes."

Later, Kurjak escorts Hanneke through Kampa Island Park.

“So Tesla is your girlfriend, Kurjak?”

“Hmm... let's just say we're two good friends currently involved in an intimate relationship.”

“I'd be happy to be able to define what's between me and Harlan that way.”

“Well, you see, we lead a strange life.”

“Demons and magic, right? And while he, Caleb, and Tesla investigate the mysteries, you've been given the unpleasant task of taking this nosy woman for a walk.”

“Don't put it that way. It's not unpleasant at all.”

“Okay, I like you too. But I'd prefer to be alone for a while. Or am I perhaps under special surveillance?”

“No, of course not!”

“Be a good boy. Go get me something warm from the pub around the corner. I'll wait for you by the river. I won't run away.”

“Uhm! Okay. I'll be back in a second.”
