Description

In a bubble of air at the bottom of the Vlatva river, Hanneke cools her heels under the watchful gaze of her jailer, the musically inclined Vodník:

“Red shoes, green dress, the wedding is scheduled for tomorrow…”

“Why don't you let me go?”

“Because I promised my masters… and because, in exchange for my services, once they defeat the Dampyr, I can have you.”

“Never! I'd rather escape from this underwater prison and… and drown myself!”

“You've already tried to escape, pretty Hanneke. But I can create a bubble around you to force you to live, as long as I please… until I get tired of you.”

“You should be more afraid of Harlan than of your monstrous masters, you miserable, ridiculous little man! Harlan will save me! He's already saved me from shadow creatures a thousand times more terrible than you! He doesn't even fear Hell! He'll come to rescue me and wipe that stupid, smug grin off your face! Do you understand, you slimy, disgusting refugee from a suburban nursery rhyme?” (Harlan saved Hanneke back in Dampyr #25, when he first met her in Ghent.)

“Ha ha ha! I like spicy girls! Too many times, deep in my humid cave, I've embraced silly, washed-out, girls who had no personality whatsoever. And it's clear you're infatuated with that two-bit adventurer, Harlan Draka, while he doesn't even notice you. Believe me, he'll never come to save you. He doesn't have the power, whereas will I make you a river princess. You will reign over the green waters and the nymphs of the deep… at least, those who still survive These are bad times for aquatic spirits.”

A reasonable enough observation; Harlan would need some way to get down to the bed of the deep and icy Vlatva river. Check out the fish swimming outside the bubble in the penultimate panel.

The Pied Piper? Alice in Wonderland? No matter what the page content is, it's always visually interesting.

Vodnik certainly brings the crazy eyes.

So creepy that Tim Burton should do an adaptation with Depp, Bonham-Carter, and the rest of his regulars!

Feels like it's been awhile since we circled back to Hanneke's part of the story! Nice to see her again despite the tumultuous situation she's in. River Princess sounds like a cool title but not sure the juice is worth the squeeze in this case.
