Description
I’m thrilled to be the caretaker of this historic Batman: The Animated Series model cel that was used in the production process to test and finalize colors for the series. This cel helped shape the look of initial merchandise, was adopted as the BTAS letterhead logo, and appeared in press kits and early advertising campaigns, from trading cards to life-size cutout standees.
Variations of this production color model cel were first used in newspapers for a Kroger promotional campaign as early as August 2, 1992, running through August 26. The same period that featured the well-known promotional cel with Batman, the Joker, and Harley Quinn. I also have additional newspaper clippings saved that show a timeline of some of the earliest Batman: The Animated Series ads and promotional art, including material that predates the Batman promotional cel (with Joker and Harley) by about three weeks.

It was ironically a fresh new take on Batman by going retro after Batman 89 and the grim and gritty era of the comics.
