DescriptionHarry Devlin (1918-2001) was a wonderful cartoonist and illustrator, most well-known for his sweet Cranberry series of children’s books. Devlin worked in a variety of mediums throughout his career, from magazines to advertising, winning six National Cartoonist Society awards in the process. In the 1950s, Devlin created Fullhouse, a nationally syndicated strip that ran in 1954 and 1955. The strip was syndicated by the Editors Syndicate, a small outfit with only a handful of strips in its stable. Fullhouse sometimes ran under the title Raggmopp and the Kids, and I’ve seen at least one example that went into 1956. With these small syndicates, often having small client papers, things were always published according to schedule. Devlin drew the feature while his wife Wendy wrote it. The strip mainly featured a cast of kid characters, with the occasional adult making a cameo appearance. Many years ago, I bought a lot of 16 of the strips, the only ones I’ve ever seen. I sold a few of them over the years and have decided to keep just one for my collection and offer up the remaining 10 dailies. I haven’t been able to date all the strips, but most are from 1955, with a couple from 1954, and one from 1956. The strips feature the main characters: Ritchie, Brion and Lexi; in addition to other characters. The pieces were executed entirely in brush and ink and shows off Devlin’s inking skills beautifully. He was clearly from the less-is-more school of cartooning, and drew the spaces and figures in each strip beautifully. The strips measure approximately 5½”x 16¼”, with a couple of them being shorter. Some strips have some glue staining on the back, but these were drawn on an illustration board type material, so nothing shows through. You can see some light-to-moderate staining on a few of the strips. At first I thought it was foxing, but it does not appear to be so. Even with the flaws, this is a bargain of a lot. $300.00 for all 10 strips + 20.00 shipping.Social/Sharing |
