Bonus 7 - For my last bonus image, I wanted to share a special poster by Jack Kirby that I got when I signed up to be a member of the Jack Kirby museum when it was first starting. The print is dated 1975 but I received it in 2005 when the museum was founded. Jack Kirby created so many wonderful characters, but the Silver Surfer was chosen as his top creation by experts in the 50th issue of the Jack Kirby Collector. I fell in love with Jack Kirby’s version of the character when I first laid eyes of the splash page in Fantastic Four 57 where Doctor Doom tricks the Silver Surfer into stealing his powers. I don’t have an original Kirby page, but I do have a copy of his last Surfer issue, a trade paperback copy of the Fireside book from 1978, signed by the King, not once but twice. Unfortunately, there is no certificate of authenticity so I cannot confirm if either one of those signatures is real. I will therefore continue my quest to get an original piece of Jack Kirby art depicting the Silver Surfer. I never got to meet the King, but I want to thank Jack Kirby for creating my favourite character and for inspiring me with the greatness of his work and his creation. As big of a fan as I am of the Surfer, it is only in doing this 60th anniversary countdown since the creation of the character that I discovered that Fantastic Four 48 with a cover date of March 1966, and containing the Surfer’s first appearance, was released on December 9, 1965, which happens to be my grand-mother’s 43rd birthday. This is meaningful to me because she had such an important influence on me, almost to the same extent as Jack’s work and his creation of the Surfer.
