Description
In 2023 my buddy Daryl posted a pair of absolutely EPIC commissions by Gerhard. I was in absolute awe of these pieces and reached out for Gerhard's contact info. I drafted an email but got hung up on what subject matter to ask for. The draft waited for over a year in my mailbox, and I even saw that Gerhard was at OAX 2024, but Team Oreo kept me busy and I didn't have time to set something up. Finally, in October of 2024 I sent the email.

Alas, I received a reply that Gerhard had hung up his tools and retired after turning 65. I really was a fool.

I did note, however, that Gerhard would once again be at OAX and in 2025 he was my very first stop. I had a very nice chat with him and his wife, and I was able to pick up a couple of pre-dones to forever remind me of my silliness. In chatting Gerhard described these wonderful little snippets as "Moments of Cerebus" and I thought that was very fitting.

So here is Cerebus, sitting at a bar late into the night, wishing he had sent that email earlier.

Gerhard proved time and time again that the pen is mightier than the sword.

A fine pick up! Not sure why an artist would ever want to retire, but perhaps that is a story for another day.

More like "In delay there lies no plenty".

I'll play: "I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought. And with old woes new wail my dear time's waste:"

Cheers to Gerhard! No thought bubbles necessary here. We all have emails we wish we sent, but ultimately sometimes we just need a little breaded fried chicken and art friends to take the pain away of our unrequited comic art requests.

A finely etched depiction of a quiet moment in Cerebus's otherwise turbulent life. For a retired cartoonist he's still got it!

Thinking about 2026 OAX and all the art you can buy...

These beautiful little snippets of Cerebus each tell a story of their own. Gerhard will be missed at OAX 2026 in a couple weeks. He would undoubtedly be my first stop as I would love to pick up another little piece of Gerhard magic.

This is terrific!  Love the POV and staging, and the attitude/expression is perfect

Beautiful technique and a great angle. That more than makes up for any potential regrets.

Still not set emailing just to pass this time
There's something wrong here, Gerhard be no retiring
Cerebus is changing, or maybe we've just stopped trying

And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though he really retired to make it
Something inside has lines and I can't hide
And I just can take it, Oreo!

It used to be so easy drinking here with you
You were light and silly and I knew just hung up tools
Now you look so unhappy, and I feel like a fool

And it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though he's silly did try to make it
Something inside has lines, Gerhard can't hide
And I just can take it, Oreo

Always a poignant reminder that, sometimes you can get what you want and still not be very happy.

A wonderful moment of Cerebus, but also of zingers and ale! Start the countdown!

Beautiful art that reminds me that I need to finish what I started in 1994 and read the rest of Cerebus, even if the later years of the book have a reputation that doesn't match the earlier years (although one thing that never changed was praise for Gerhard's work).

Really fun and really nicely done. Glad you got it in spite of the "retirement"!
