Description

Junnu was a Finnish comic strip published weekly from 1927 till 1934. It was drawn by an Estonian-born artist, cartoonist and illustrator Alexander Tawitz (1879-1937). Junnu depicted in a humorous way the daily life of its main character Junnu Kivanen, and it became very popular at its time. Other main characters were Junnu’s girlfriend Alli and prankish twins Niku and Naku. The comic strip did not have speech balloons, and the text was typeset under each panel, which was very typical of Finnish comic strips of the 1920´s. This sample also gives an excellent glimpse of the fashion of the era with Junnu in his suit with carnation, bowtie and straw hat, and Alli with her Louise Brooks-style bop cut and flapper girl look. The strip was originally published in a Finnish weekly news magazine “Suomen Kuvalehti” #23, 1928 (cover date June 2, 1928). The additional image shows the published version.
