Description
This is the very first page from the Spectre's first solo title -- ever. And what an entrance it is: an opening splash so dramatic it could have easily served as the cover, with the swashbuckling Spectre and Captain Skull framed against a colossal, corpse-white skull. Though the Spectre debuted in 1940, he wouldn't headline his own book until editor Julius Schwartz resurrected the Golden Age avenger for the Silver Age, launching him through a three-issue Showcase tryout drawn by Murphy Anderson. This revival didn't just restore the character, it supercharged him to near-omnipotence.
This clean, beautifully orchestrated splash gives us the Spectre in full figure, even stepping out of the panel for an immersive punch. Look closer and you'll catch Anderson's sly design trick: the Spectre and Captain Skull's heads positioned precisely over the giant skull's eye sockets, creating eerie pupil-like illusions (a note about the effect even appears in the margin). The logo is woven elegantly above the skull, while the story credits rest on a scroll beneath the Spectre in an artful, theatrical arrangement that sets the tone for a series steeped in supernatural vengeance rather than mundane costumed crime.
