Tally-Ho Original Cover Art

This single issue of the title featured a cover that spotlights an important all-new character... the Snowman! He was created by a then 16-year-old Frank Frazetta, who has contributed interior art to this issue and, we think, also had a hand in the cover! The Snowman story inside is widely acknowledged as his first published work (inking some of the figures). And this cover is Snowman's very first appearance. Regarding the Frazetta attribution, we consulted Michael Finn, author of a forthcoming book on Frazetta's time at Baily Publishing. He notes that there are unpublished Baily covers featuring the Snowman as penciled by Frazetta, and that Frazetta penciled at least three Snowman stories at Baily, one of which is published in this comic, Tally-Ho #1. All three stories were inked by John Giunta. Further, there is at least one unpublished cover in the Baily archives where the Snowman character was penciled by Frazetta but not inked, indicating that the inking would be by Giunta. In light of the relationship between the two artists, Frazetta's creation of the character and his penciling of interior stories for Giunta to ink, Mr. Finn noted, "it is improbable that Frazetta was not involved in the creation of this cover. He almost surely provided pencil work for John Giunta to ink." Created in ink over graphite on illustration board with an image area of 12" x 17". Signed by Giunta in the lower right. Personal note: After our friend Michael Halperin (Mikey) passed, this was auctioned on Heritage. I remember when he bought it years ago for under $5,000. He called me and said, “Wanna see what I got?” He sent me a picture of it and I told him to fuck off. He laughed his famous hysterical, obnoxious laugh. I won this last year when it went to auction, to keep it with me, not just because it represents the FIRST PUBLISHED WORK by one of the masters of our hobby, but because it’s another thing that reminds me and keeps me connected to him.
