Matt Wagner Painted art for Mage

Matt Wagner as a painter is something to behold. When the color guides were offered up 2 years ago or so, I had to pick one that had all of the primary characters from the first series, Kevin, Mirth, Edsel, and Excalibur (the baseball bat).

I also added the color guide without the black and white outlines. It makes me wonder how they paint with the black and white lines.

I really enjoyed the Mage series and remember it launching so many years ago while I was in college. The comic book store is called Time Warp and it is still in the city to this day. Those were some of the best days, meeting Dave Sims, the Pini's, and several other artists that came through.

Kevin Matchstick, an alienated young man who meets a wizard called Mirth and discovers that he, among other things, possesses both a magic baseball bat and superhuman abilities. In the course of the comic, he defeats the nefarious plans of a being called the Umbra Sprite. He ultimately discovers that Mirth is Merlin, the baseball bat is Excalibur, and he is, in some ambiguous way, King Arthur.
