HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE (1983-1985) Skeletor on the Throne Original Production Cel Setup on Key Master Production Background

An awesome original multi-cel production setup on a hand-painted master production pan background with background overlays, featuring Skeletor, Whiplash and Clawful, from the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe episode "Fraidy Cat" (Ep. 84), Filmation Associates, 1984.

This Snake Mountain scene has everything: Two of Skeletor's most formidable lieutenants, Clawful and Whiplash, gathered around the Crystal Ball, the great glowing orb through which the Lord of Destruction surveys his domain and Eternia, caught in the last moment of conspiratorial calm before He-Man and Battle Cat come crashing through the walls.

The interaction between the three figures is superb, expressions locked in focused, scheming intensity. As a fine art piece of Masters of the Universe production art, it is about as good as it gets.

Filmation's He-Man and the Masters of the Universe arrived in 1983 as the first American animated series produced directly in association with a toy line, and the shockwave it sent through the industry is still felt today. Lou Scheimer's studio had found a production model that worked at speed and scale without sacrificing character, and the result reached thirty million viewers daily across more than a hundred countries at its peak. Skeletor, voiced with magnificent theatrical menace by Alan Oppenheimer, became one of the great cartoon villains of the decade, a character whose combination of genuine threat and operatic absurdity has kept him culturally alive long after the toys that spawned him were retired.

The scene from "Fraidy Cat," production episode MU84, is confirmed at timecode 18:01, in which Skeletor dispatches Whiplash and Clawful to lay a false trail across Eternia while his other lieutenants kidnap Queen Marlena. The briefing is almost complete. Seconds later, everything falls apart.

Pan backgrounds are among the most coveted formats in Filmation production art, wider than the standard field and reserved for scenes requiring lateral camera movement. The additional painted overlay layers deepen the Snake Mountain interior considerably, and the complete character cel setup has survived intact on an original painted background.

The vast majority of Filmation production art was destroyed after use, discarded once the episode was delivered. What survives does so because it was deliberately preserved and released through official channels, the Filmation production seal present here confirms exactly that, a piece that left the studio as it was meant to.

At approximately 23.5 inches wide by 11 inches tall, it commands a room. Production annotations MU84, B, 2384, S+11, MANA-84 and 22380 are legible along the lower edge with further coding along the upper edge. Great condition. Some production wear. Unframed.
