Description
An exceptional collection of three original production drawings from Walt Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), featuring Quasimodo, Claude Frollo, and the gargoyle Hugo.

Executed in graphite on animation paper, the drawings showcase the large-scale character work that defined Disney's darkest and most ambitious animated feature. The first drawing shows Quasimodo marked "Q-39" with scene numbers 39, 41, and 43, capturing the hunchback's distinctive hunched posture and gentle expression. The second features the gargoyle Hugo with his characteristic wings, marked "L-21" with scene numbers 23 and 25. The third depicts Claude Frollo in a moment of dramatic intensity, marked "P-19" with scene numbers 21 and 23, showcasing the angular, severe design that made him one of Disney's most menacing villains.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame represented Disney's boldest artistic and thematic venture during the 1990s renaissance. Directors Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise adapted Victor Hugo's complex novel into a family film that tackled themes of social justice, religious hypocrisy, and prejudice with unprecedented sophistication. The film's gothic aesthetic and mature subject matter pushed Disney animation into new creative territory.

The production employed innovative computer animation techniques for the cathedral sequences and crowd scenes while maintaining the expressive hand-drawn character animation evident in these drawings. The key frame markings indicate their importance in establishing character performance within specific sequences. Production drawings of this caliber rarely survive outside official studio channels, making this collection exceptionally valuable.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame has gained critical recognition as one of Disney's most artistically ambitious features. The film's complex characters, particularly Frollo's psychological depth and Quasimodo's emotional journey, demonstrated animation's capacity for sophisticated storytelling.

These drawings represent rare examples of Disney production art that was not released through official studio programs. The comprehensive production markings and expressive character work make this collection essential for understanding Disney's animation process during this creatively ambitious period.
