Description

Silver Surfer (Vol. 3) Issue #46 was released December 18, 1990, and marks a major moment in Gamora’s publication history. This issue features her first return to comics since 1977, ending a thirteen year absence. For my collection, its importance goes even further because this is only the second time Gamora and Drax appear together in a comic, the first being Warlock (Vol. 1) #15 from 1976.

This issue is also a turning point in Gamora’s development. It is only the ninth comic in her full reading order and the first issue drawn by Ron Lim, whose work throughout the 1990s helped define her modern visual identity. In continuity, Silver Surfer #46 sits between The Thanos Quest and Infinity Gauntlet #1, landing just five issues before the start of Infinity Gauntlet and pulling Gamora and Drax back into the center of Marvel’s cosmic narrative.

The dynamic fight sequence and the way it reflects Gamora and Drax’s early shared history before joining the Guardians of the Galaxy make this page a key piece within the Guardians of the Galaxy Throughout Time, unofficial gallery collection.

The artwork is 11x17 in size.

Drax and Gamora make a great one-two punch on this action packed page.

Hey Rick. Your comment sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole. Unlike most of my other Guardians of the Galaxy comic art, I had not fully skimmed every issue due to being busier than usual. By skimming, I mean opening each issue to verify appearances.

I recently did a quick skim of Gamora’s reading order and found that Drax and Gamora both appear in Warlock #10. There is also a possible appearance of Drax as a Moondragon thought image in Avengers Annual #7, though it is minimal and not clearly defined. The Complete Marvel Reading Order seems to miss these appearances, likely because Warlock #10 is primarily a Thanos origin story and the Avengers Annual 7 appearance is only a thought projection with, at most, a small head image.

In both issues, Drax and Gamora are not on the same page, so they are not crossing paths. In Warlock #15, there is only one page where they appear together. Drax is shown blurred on a monitor screen as he attacks Gamora, and the interaction lasts a single page. Beyond that, I could not find any other shared pages.

This page is the fourth page in Silver Surfer #46 featuring both characters and, as far as I can tell, only the fifth page in total where Drax and Gamora appear together on a single page across all of comic history. Flipping through the comics always turns up something new.

This is one of the earliest pages I could realistically find showing them together. Since my collection prior to Thanos #8 is meant to represent how the team came together, this page works about as well as possible for visually showing that process. Drax and Gamora are the only two main Guardians of the Galaxy (Vol. 2/ MCU) characters (Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Groot, Rocket Raccoon), who met prior to the Annihilation series, and this appearance is very close to where they first intersect in the comics. For the rest of the team, the collection already captures their earliest meeting issues with Star-Lord, so it's just one more piece of history for the team I collect.

Thanks for sending me down a rabbit hole lol. I look forward to the next time we can meet up and maybe I will find you a Captain America rabbit hole to research.
