Red Sonja - EMERALD FIRE / Bazal. 8,3x11,7 in.
“burning without heat”
In this piece, Red Sonja puts the sword aside… because she clearly doesn’t need it. Ángel Bazal delivers a more intimate and provocative version of the Hyborian warrior, where attitude takes center stage: direct gaze, relaxed pose, and a confidence that borders on insolence.
The use of green ballpoint pen is once again an unexpected yet highly effective choice. Rather than feeling cold, the color creates an almost hypnotic atmosphere, as if we’re seeing Sonja through an unreal filter… or perhaps as if she’s pulling us into her domain. The monochromatic approach forces the artist to push linework to its limits—density, direction, and pressure build a remarkable sense of volume, especially in the abdominal structure and the sheen of the skin.
From an artistic critique perspective, Bazal uses color not to replicate reality, but to reinterpret it. Green—normally detached from flesh tones—creates a psychological contrast that amplifies sensuality rather than diminishing it. It’s almost a “wrong” color turned into a striking visual success.
And then there’s the intent… bold, playful, and just a bit cheeky: Sonja seems to be thinking, “yes, I’m a deadly warrior… but today I’m more interested in making you lose focus.” Judging by the result—mission accomplished.
