Young Boy

Jones created this piece for a syndicated article in a Sunday magazine entitled "Is it Good for Children." The printed version included four small vignettes arranged in a square that are shown in the second image.

At one point, Jones and Bernie Wrightson had a conversation (possibly apochryphal) about art where Wrightson asked at what point an image in deep shadow, such as this one, was no longer was useful. Jones's response was that as long as it wasn't all black then it could work.

This piece certainly works to convey the innocence of a child, juxtaposed with the ills that the world can inflict. Pen and ink on thin illustration board, 11 x 14.
