The Crusades is an American comic book series published by the Vertigo imprint of DC Comics from 2001-2002. It was created by writer Steven T. Seagle and penciller Kelley Jones.
The series was set in a fictionalized San Francisco and featured a large cast of characters whose lives are thrown into disarray by the sudden appearance of a murderous 11th Century knight in the city. Main Characters included Anton Marx, a leftwing political radio “shock jock”, his fact checker girlfriend Venus Kostopikas, her friend Detective Addas Petronas and the rival gangsters Tony Quetone and “the Pope”.
This is the page on which Venus is knighted, and the birth page for her alter-ego Sir Venus of Antioch, which is the springboard for the crescendo and finale. It’s a beautifully composed splash page by Sandman co-creator Kelley Jones, whose long run on Batman comics in the 1990s included Knightfall, the story that introduced Bane and was serialized in hit film, Dark Knight Rises.
