Description

Cover date September 1969.

WAR IS HELL-- ON ICE!  John Severin pencils and inks! Full team in blazing action! THIS IS IT, BELIEVER!

Severin's covers and inks were a high point in this Sgt. Fury spinoff. Like Fury and the Howling Commandos, Captain Savage led a team of Battlefield Raiders composed of a professional leatherneck who second-guessed the Navy captain's combat leadership, Frenchman, Native American professional wrestler, sailor, and schoolteacher. The series lasted only 19 issues, with Dick Ayers and Syd Shores penciling and inking most covers and interior art.

Historical note: The setting of this issue, the Aleutian Islands in Alaska, was the location of the only military campaign by the enemy on North American soil during the war. Japanese forces invaded the islands in June 1942, possibly to divert US attention from its naval task force enroute to Midway Island. The US had retaken the islands by August 1943.

John Severin's gritty inking style always gave the art a really nice, textured look and feel. I have to ask though, what exactly did Captain Savage's raiders accomplish in order to graduate from being leatherneck raiders to being battlefield raiders?

A new battle front that doesn't get enough coverage in war comics as the winter months were more about holding lines rather than advancing.  Blade was years away, but his advice would have served well in this instance.

And to think, they could have just settled all of this with a snowball fight.

Interesting to see Marvel advertise the title as an off-beat war version. ~Congratulations on a super cool Marvel cover!

Wow! Silver Age Marvel covers (of any kind, let alone ones that fit your specific collecting tastes/niches) don't come around every day. Stellar addition. congrats Peter.

Insanely cool cover Peter! A very special pick up indeed. This is a beauty. Also, I never knew any fighting in WWII was anywhere in the US besides Hawaii. Thanks for the lesson.

Awesome addition. Love the way Severin leads the eye through the page starting in the bottom right corner and zig-zags into the back. Congrats!

I wondered where this one went. The composition is wonderful and the lines are so gritty. Great cover!
