In the original graphic novel Level Up written by Gene Yang and drawn by Thien Pham, protagonist Dennis Ouyang studies to become a doctor while fighting his urge to play video games. The authors dedicated the book to their brothers who work in the medical field and being "good Asian sons.". In this chapter, Dennis Ouyang starts medical school and forms his friend group. This page starts with Kat's background in a flashback told by Hector to Dennis. As a ten-year-old, she was shot in an armed robbery at her family's dry cleaning business. A stranger in a leather jacket saved her life. He asked her to clean his jacket, but never returned. So Kat wears his jacket and studies to be an ER doctor.
