I generally steered clear of Excalibur due to the non-US bias but it looks like I missed out on great Alan Davis art.
You should give the Alan Davis/Claremont run and the later Alan written stuff a shot. At the time when most of the X-titles were heavy handed and drama filled (still in a good way), it was a nice break with humor and heart.
Unfortunantly, the series had a lot of challenges outside of those two runs.
