Paul Carmack was a staff cartoonist for the Christian Science Monitor.

Success is in the air. Operations Reckless and Persecution, launched April 22,  just demonstrated two expansions of the “Leapfrogging” strategy of taking large swaths of the Pacific instead of picking off islands one at a time. 

Operation Cartwheel has just neutralized a major Japanese base at Rabaul, and the US is advancing rapidly through the Southwest and Central Pacific in non-linear jumps. With its eye on the prize, planning is underway for the next major steps toward the Marianas and ultimately Tokyo.
