Description

"The Sky Is Free!" by unknown writer. Marvel (then called Atlas). Cover date March 1954.

"During the Korean War, the battle line on the ground changed frequently from one side of the 38th Parallel to the other! But the sky, north and south of the Bamboo Curtain, was always U.N. territory...thanks to the men and planes such as these..."

Second MiG Alley page! Lots of aerial action and different types of aircraft in early Heath fashion! Last panel reminds me of the end of the William Holden/Grace Kelly movie The Bridges at Toko-Ri.

The page features Soviet MiG-15s and US Sabre jets as well as the World War II-era B-29 bomber and F4U Corsair fighter. Soviet pilots secretly flew MiG-15s in combat, maintaining the fiction that the USSR, a UN Security Council member, wasn't at war with UN forces.

The Corsair was flown by the Marines during World War II and is perhaps most recognizable from the TV show Baa Baa Black Sheep about Medal of Honor recipient Major Pappy Boyington and his Corsair squadron. Boyington took a dim view of the show, calling it "hokum and Hollywood hogwash." Agree! (Wikipedia)

Nice Heath page but this isn't WWII. What's next, the Vietnam War?

Battlefront is a cool title with many great covers and interiors, I only know that because I've picked up several (and re-sold) in collections over the years but always especially enjoyed the Russ Heath covers he did for the series, beautiful Heath interior art here, and I love a good mid air free fall to parachute sequence! Very nice addition Peter, congrats.

Great dogfighting images!  All the drama of a life and death struggle plays out in front of us panel by panel and we don't even need to see their faces!

Not only does this page provide some wonderful War action by Russ Heath, but I really love that it was published only a year after the Korean War ended. So topical at the time!
