Paul Carmack was a staff cartoonist for the Christian Science Monitor.

The geography of urgency shifted quickly once the war turns. The Allied invasion of Sicily has succeeded, and the Armistice of Cassibile, announced September 8, has taken Italy effectively out of the Axis war. The Mediterranean campaign is being reframed as largely won.

India’s placement is important: it’s the hinge between Europe and Asia for moving armament and troops. Now that Europe is being handled, the full weight of Allied naval power can be turned on Japan.
