14x17" layout bond paper has 8.5x11" image area in graphite pencil preliminary art for the cover of Scale Modeler Magazine May 1971 issue showing Curtiss Kittyhawk Mk.I/II w/British markings of a Desert Harasser fighter aircraft (pin-up girl on engine cowling) vs. an Italian Fiat G.50 Freccia fighter. Preliminary art features a slightly different positioning than the final published cover. Art was by Otto Kuhni (1927-2017), who started doing freelance work in 1962, including some projects for Mattel that predate his involvement w/Hot Wheels (for which he is predominantly known) in 1967. Kuhni also produced freelance work for Lockheed, McDonald Douglas, Max Factor, L.M. Cox, Challenge Publications, Galoob and Tyco among others. Unsigned but comes in portfolio w/his studio label. Lt. aging/wear. Small hole at upper left and several creases on upper left corner but art remains clean and Exc.
