Lynn Minmay is considered the first fictional character to achieve genuine success as a Japanese idol in the real music industry, and the person who drew this sketch of her is the man who created her face: Haruhiko Mikimoto, original character designer of Super Dimension Fortress Macross.
Executed in black marker on a shikishi. A shikishi is the square cardboard traditionally used in Japan for artist signatures, dedications, and quick portrait sketches, exchanged at events as a personal gift from artist to fan. This was drawn by Mikimoto at Napoli Comicon on 6th March 2005, signed and dated in his own hand.
Minmay's significance within Macross is difficult to overstate. Her songs literally turn the tide of Space War I, confusing the Zentradi fleet at a critical moment, and her voice actress Mari Iijima became a real J-pop star on the back of the role. Mikimoto bringing her to life in marker, at a fan convention, two decades after her creation, says everything about how enduring that bond between character designer and character remains.
