Bob Lubbers Tarzan

Robert Lubbers, Bob Lubbers for short, started his comics career doing freelance work for pulp magazines, after attending the Art Students League in New York. In 1942, he was employed by Fiction House, where he worked as art director from 1945 until 1950. He worked on almost all published comics, such as 'Captain Wings', 'U.S. Rangers', 'Captain Terry Thunder', 'Rip Carson', 'Commando Ranger' and 'Firehair'.
After 1950, Bob Lubbers joined United Feature Syndicate and took over the 'Tarzan' daily comic and Sunday page. Between 1954 and 1958, he worked with writer Al Capp on 'Long Sam', and in 1959, he succeeded John Spranger on 'The Saint'. Lubbers switched to King Features in 1960, where he drew 'Secret Agent X-9' under the pseudonym Bob Lewis (1960-67). Lubbers also came up with 'Robin Mallone' for Newspaper Enterprise Association in 1968. Between 1970 and 1977, he worked with Al Capp again, this time as assistant on 'Li'l Abner'. After doing some comic book work for Marvel in the late 1970s ('The Human Fly', 'Black Goliath', 'Defenders'), Lubbers focused on advertising art and pin-up illustrations, before retiring in 1989.
