DescriptionWhen I read this book some 28 years ago, this was my first exposure to Phoenix since I did not start reading the new X-Men until issue 109. Much thanks go to Brian Peck for keeping me in mind when he sold it. John and Terry did such an incredible job in the last two panels with drawing what Claremont, he, and Austin would accelerate into for the next 25 issues displaying the fierce savagery of Phoenix's power.UPDATE: Yes, this page is no longer in my collection. Do not look to Alexandre Bihn's collection to find this outstanding page anymore. Carlo Michelini purchased this page back in 2018. I was the owner of this page for 10 years, and it brought me much joy. Provenance is nice to know for pages like this. While I would have to consult with Brian for the provenance prior to him, I can at least point the provenance back to 2002. UPDATE, UPDATE: It is amazing to build and to establish the relationships in this hobby. As I wrote back in my last update, this page has had two owners since I sold it originally to Alexandre Bihn. Carlo and I worked a transaction that enabled me to bring this page back to my collection after eight years. It is truly an honor when you can re-aquire a page that means a great deal from your sentimental youth. Grazie mille e tanti complimenti, Carlo! Addendum: Since I posted this page many years ago with some fanfare, a sub-set of original art collecting has taken hold of our 'investment' hobby now. Without identifying the numerous collectors who have elevated birth and first appearance original art pages to all time highs, this page is from Claremont and Byrne's first opportunity to make Magneto understand that Marvel Girl did not equal Phoenix. She makes it quite well known on this page when she attacks as Phoenix. This one is a stretch, but it seems to hold some mettle as a "First something". As a result, I changed the title heading now that I have moved this to my Featured gallery section. Social/Sharing |

Congrads PR a classic. I remember this series fondly. I was lucky & picked up the X-Men even way before the New crew arrived in 75. beautiful page. Loved your work over in Action Comics especially Capt.Marvel/Shazam!

Panel 3 is astounding!Mark, I would first like to thank you for both of your comments (one in 2007 and one in 2012 - cool!). When BP offered me this page at the SDCC 2003, I was immediately thrust back to my elementary school days when I first read this comic book. Panel 3 was so ferocious with my introduction to the Phoenix effect. Byrne and Austin crafted such an incredible sequence that carried onto the following page. I may one day post that page as well.

Stay patient, my friend. The stars aligned for both of us that day, selling this page helped me acquire a page from X-Men #8, first X-Men issue I ever read. Its great when we both get something we both will cherish for years

Thank you so much for the comment. I purchased this page from another Premium collector back in 2003, and I made a tragic mistake of selling it 10 years later. However, good fortune prevailed when the previous owner made this page available again a couple of years ago, albeit at a much higher price to pay than what I paid in 2003. Like you wrote, I really enjoyed/still enjoy the raw drama for how Claremont/Byrne/Austin developed this page to show Phoenix's raw power as he took out each X-Man prior to this confrontation. Only Wolverine was left after Magneto took out Phoenix on the next page.

Not many get a second chance so Im so glad you to add it back. After I read this story I was dying to read #113. I was only 12 and I know its hard to believe but was not able to get a hold of 113 till 5 years later while reading 112 over and over again. Layton and Perez for the cover with Wolvie holding his own arm or impaling himself!

The 1st X-Men book I ever bought. I SO wanted her to just blow Magneto away. That's how I would have written it. That's also why my stories are too short!
Congratulations on owning this Byrne beauty!
