Here is Carl Barks doing what he is most famous for, drawing anthropomorphic ducks. This time for San Diego Comicon. He did appear in the 1977 and 1982 cons. The fact that the duck lady refers to it as "The San Diego Con" indicates that it was an early con. I got this piece from Jerry Weist and Chris Boyko, DBA Arcturian Books, the sole agents for the initial dispersal of the Carl Barks Estate. This came with a check by Barks dated May 14, 1997 which appears unconnected with this since it is paying for an overnight letter to Phoenix. I presume that a random check was thrown into the auction so that the winner would have a Barks signature even though the piece itself is unsigned
I confess I'm not enough of a Donald or Scrooge fan to know whether or not the characters there are actual ones from the comics or something made up for this piece. I do know that Bel-Marduk was a Babylonian god probably chosen here because it sounds like a duck character's name.
If anybody knows which SDCC this was for and if its final version founds its way into the program or some other collection, I would appreciate your letting me know.
