Description

Fanny Cory (1877-1972) was an early pioneer of female illustrators in a male-dominated industry. In 1895, Cory attended art school in New York City, and by the turn-of-the-century had work appearing in St. Nicholas, Life, Scribner's, Harper's Bazaar and the Saturday Evening Post. She also illustrated an edition of Alice in Wonderland, as well as several books by L. Frank Baum.

Cory briefly retired from the illustration field, to raise her family in Montana, but by the 1920s she started her work in newspaper cartooning. In 1935, she began Little Miss Muffet for King Features, a strip featuring a curly-haired orphan who closely resembled Shirley Temple. It's most likely that King Features launched this strip in an attempt to rival Little Orphan Annie.

This particular daily strip is from 2/1/47, and features the main character and Lottie, as they ski down a hill. The daily features some lovely shading techniques, as can be seen in the following detail images.

I owned this strip many years ago, but sold it at some point. It came up for sale recently and I couldn't resist bringing the piece back home. An earth-shattering piece of comic art? No, but it's a wonderful example by a forgotten great of the past.

Never heard of this strip or artist, but wou'd still love owning it in my collection. It's very sweet and whimsical. If you ever decide to part with it again Rob, can you please let me know?
