Funny story about how I picked this sketch up, when Wildstorm came out to Sydney for a convention, way back in 1997. The lines to get stuff signed were crazy that weekend since it was the first time Jim Lee, Whilce Portacio, and Travis Charest had done a convention in Australia. So they were mostly busy signing, but they managed to get a couple of sketches done too, and were giving them away randomly.

When Jim finished this one, he was actually about to eat his lunch. He asked if anyone had some ketchup to give him, they could have the sketch. Of course no one had any ketchup on them, since we had all been waiting in line for them since the morning.

So Jim figures since Wolverine's Canadian, he'll ask if anyone has any Canadian money on them. Funnily enough, the guy who was lining up with us was actually from Canada (though he had been living in Australia for a while), and his nickname was Wolvie. He was positive he at least had some small Canadian change tucked away in his wallet, but after much frantic rummaging, he found he only had Australian currency on him.

So with no one coming forward to claim the sketch, Jim asks if anyone has a knife on them (a question related to Wolvie's claws). This one guy jumps forward almost immediately with this plastic knife. Jim takes one look at him and says, "That's not a knife!" Fortunately for me I then whipped out the pocket knife I had in my pocket (back when it was still legal to carry one), and so I won the sketch.

When I think about it... that weekend was the first time I found out about Whilce's studio/classes in the Philippines too, which eventually led me to training under him and getting into the biz.

P.s. I should probably take this out of the frame and scan, and post, a better image when I get time.

Who would believe Jim Lee could have such a hard time giving away a drawing. Great story.

Super cool story! The early days of Homage Studios was the golden age of comics for me. Awesome Wolvie
