This particular page featured the introduction of "Black Kryptonite" into the DC Universe proper, the first new color of kryptonite added in a long time (recently. "Magic K" or "Silver K" was introduced, with "Special K" coming up next). Black Krytptonite actually first appeared in the TV series "Smallville", and became part of the "the comic reflects the TV show / movie" trend. The Superman comics of today are getting closer and closer to the version represented in the Superman movies (like the crystal Fortress of Solitude and Phantom Zone villians), with the theory being the comic book publishers do not want to confuse the wider TV/movie viewing audience. Spider-man has also been a victim of this trend (i.e. organic web shooters), but thanks to Mephisto, that was taken care of along with his marriage. You should also recognize most of the jokes on this page from the JLI cartoon episode, "The Great Brain Robbery."
