Blackhawks by Dick Giordano

There is an interesting story behind this commission, for the longest time I have wanted someone to recreate the cover to Blackhawk 18. It is just a great scene depicting the Dark Knights in all their World War II glory. Dick Giordano was one of the first persons I thought of because of his use of blacks. I mailed off the request, Dick agreed to do it and a couple of weeks later mailed me back saying he was having a bit of an issue with the commission. Basically he had tried a couple of layouts but came to the conclusion, “Crandall got it right the first time.” Little wonder that Dick tried to get him to pencil the final two issues of Blackhawk back in the late 60s.

Dick offered to create a new image of the Blackhawk team if I was willing. My only suggestion was go ahead and make this the Blackhawk cover you never got to draw.
