This wonderful gem of a self-portrait by Steve Ditko was originally published in Wally Wood's Witzend #1 in 1966. It is an exceptionally rare and nuanced glimpse inside the artist's psyche and a lovely example of both his technical skill and his flare of expression. This piece was recently featured in Blake Bell's Ditko book, "Strange and Stranger: The World of Steve Ditko" and it has been used in press coverage for the biography, including this LA Times review.Ditko's work is among the most sought after and desirable original comic art and this is one of the most singificant pieces "inch for inch" that we have ever seen. Executed in ink and opaque white on bristol board, this art has an image area of approximately 3" x 3". This is one of two pieces from Witzend #1 being offered in this auction. A Jack Kirby "self-portrait" is available as a separate lot.
