5. George Gross Nick Carter

Nick Carter is one of the longest lasting- detective heroes beginning in the dime novel era and still appearing almost a century later as a spy in paperbacks. Nick Carter's behavior in the dime novels was incredibly chaste- as can be seen in this painting that changed in his later 20th century version


always wanted this cover since the first time I saw it in the 1990s- the detail in Gross's later work is incredible - he must have used a single strand brush- sorry I can't be as enthusiastic about the writing in the novels.

This will be part of a display that starts with his earliest Dime Novels which turned into the first pulp magazine totally dedicated to mystery and detective fiction.
