Description

The bulk of my hobby time is spent appreciating the original Marvel Two in One series. To a far lesser extent, I ruminate about MTIO team ups that I *wish* Marvel had published back when I was a kid. Sometimes, like with this piece, I go the extra step and have my little ideas turned into full blown drawings.

This faux MTIO cover was drawn by the lovely and talented Bob Layton. Bob was doing a fund raiser to pay for his dog's surgery and I took advantage of the commission deal he was offering at that time.

This commission apes the 'split' cover approach used by Strange Tales and a few other classic Marvel series in the Silver Age:

- In the top panel, the Lord-sire of the Badoon (an alien race that was once big in the Marvel universe) is keeping the Thing and John Carter, Warlord of Mars, at bay with a menacing looking beam weapon.

- In the bottom panel, Stara Kan (a John Carter, Warlord of Mars villain from years gone by) and Werewolf by Night don't seem to be getting along as they wrestle in an alien sewer system. I like mysterious objects or devices that advance stories to their thrilling, inevitable conclusion and the thingy in Stara Kan's hand fills that role nicely.

I have a half dozen or so Bob Layton commissions in my collection and his high quality of service and abundance of talent are the reasons why. Bob recently announced that he is going on a hiatus from his commission work. I am happy that he is going on to exciting new endeavors, but I am sorry that the hobby is losing such a great artist for doing commissions.

Man, do I dig the split cover! A killer piece from one of comics' great veterans.
