Description
This is a "tribute" I put together to WHISPERS editor/publisher Stuart David Schiff. Stu was a good friend of Lee's and used him for several issues of his grassroots magazine venture WHISPERS. Appearing in the summer of 1973 the magazine was small press production at it's finest. WHISPERS has certainly become a part of pulp mag history as it was an extension of the then-defunct WEIRD TALES which is where Lee delivered some of his creepiest stuff. The pelican is actually one of two pieces purchased by Stuart at his first meeting with Lee in 1969. This is mentioned in ARTS UNKNOWN on page 146. Stuart told me he only purchased two pieces from Lee's Horror Box that day, not "a few". Even though he came up a dollar short of Lee's asking price Lee let him slide and Stuart drove back home broke but ecstatic. The letter is from the eventual personal and professional realtionship that would develop between the two men. Many thanks go out to Stuart for letting me aquire all of these pieces.
